Ode to the Clouds: Pouring Vitality

30 × 54 cm, 2026Ink and traditional Korean pigments on lined Hanji paper mounted on a traditional Korean bamboo fan

Clouds come rolling across the whole fan. On the left, violet clouds wrap themselves in ink lines and swirl round, while on the right deep blue clouds swell to a great size. Between them, thin white lines of rain pour down along the ribs of the fan, and at the very center a single red spot glimmers through a gap in the clouds. Letting ink and colors spread freely and winding thick ink lines over them, I captured the movement of clouds that never stop changing shape. I love clouds. Clouds that are never still for a moment, always changing their form. Clouds bound to nowhere, attached to nothing. Above all, I love the clouds that make rain, for they do not stay; they scatter, leaving rain upon the earth as they go. An old Korean poem says that life is a single drifting cloud rising, and death is a single drifting cloud fading away. Then there is nothing to cling to, and nothing to fear. Rise like a cloud, fall as rain, and scatter once more. That is all.
