Harmony of Flight: Splendid Wingbeat
On the left of a white Hanji fan, a bird lifts its beak toward the sky and rises. Beneath its white and blue head and body, feathers of mint green and black spread out roughly, and below them red and deep brown plumes flicker like flames. To the right, blue wind and waves swirl and surge, and yellow light seeps in between them, lighting the path the bird is taking. Layering ink and colors in quick, rough strokes, I held together the tremble of the moment the wings open and the force of the wind. This flight is not a lonely movement of the bird alone. The moment it spreads its wings, the currents of the sky and the streams of air rise up on every side, as if to help it. There are old words: look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, yet heaven feeds them. The bird does not strain alone. It simply opens its wings and gives itself to the wind. Perhaps we, too, need not carry everything by ourselves. The lines swirling along the curve of the fan are an ode to all living things that lift one another up and move forward together.
