Joyful Play of Freedom: Soaring Carp

30 × 54 cm, 2026Ink and traditional Korean pigments on lined Hanji paper mounted on a traditional Korean bamboo fan

Red carp fly about the white Hanji fan with glee. The carp on the left spreads its fins wide and curls its body into a somersault, the one in the middle shakes its tail and shoots upward, and the one on the right plunges headfirst, completely upside down. Between them, blue lines loop round and round, circling like bubbles, like wind. Flicking ink and colors in light, quick, playful strokes, I kept the carp's mischievous movements just as they are. These carp are not swimming. Each one is flying, cheerful, lively, delighted. There is an old story: someone watching fish at leisure said, "That is the joy of fish," and was asked in return, "You are not a fish; how do you know their joy?" I am not a carp either, so I cannot know their hearts completely. Yet watching these carp on the fan, I almost feel I do. To simply play, with no set course and no heavy reason. That is freedom. That is release.
