Soaring Pride: The Three-Legged Crow

30 × 54 cm, 2026Ink and traditional Korean pigments on lined Hanji paper mounted on a traditional Korean bamboo fan

At the center of a white Hanji fan, a great bird twists its long neck to look behind it. Beneath its body, three feet grip firmly with their claws, and to the left long tail feathers of ink and deep plum sweep down along the curve of the fan like a whirlwind. On the right, an earth-brown wing swells round, and black lines of ink swirl over it, giving off energy. Drawing ink and colors in bold, unbroken strokes, I let the bird's spirit stretch beyond the edges of the fan. The Samjogo is the three-legged crow that dwelt within the sun in the tomb murals of Goguryeo. It is said that people of old placed the spirit of Goguryeo in this bird: a confidence that did not shrink before any great power, a self-respect rooted in believing in oneself. Yet today, the Samjogo is hardly to be seen around us. Missing it, I called the bird back onto this fan. It has been said that every being strives, as far as it can, to persevere in its own being. Self-respect is not the power to press others down, but the power not to lose oneself. Each time this fan is opened, I hope the strength and potential sleeping within us quietly awaken.
