Circulating Universe: The Moving Chilseonggak

132 × 92 cm, 2026Ink and traditional Korean pigments on lined Hanji paper

In an ink-dark night sky, the Big Dipper is joined by white points and fine lines, and beneath it stands a small shrine. Under its blue tiled roof, the brackets of the eaves curl upward in spirals, and the red pillars do not stand straight but sway like waves. Round lanterns coil at the top of each post, and below, green vines rise from the earth and reach toward the shrine. Beside it sit two small bowls, like the ones in which mothers of old offered clear water to the spirits of the Seven Stars. Laying ink and colors on lined Hanji paper and winding countless free lines of ink over them, I let stars, shrine and grass breathe and move together. Chilseonggak, the Shrine of the Seven Stars, began as a place of old Korean folk belief and, once taken into Buddhist temples, remained as a very small hall. Yet each of these small halls holds our breath and spirit whole. The spirits of the Seven Stars, long believed to watch over people's lifespans and fortunes, gather there beyond the flow of time. They are simply nature, simply sky, and the whole of our lives as well. An old saying holds that to see what is small is called clarity. Inside the smallest of shrines, the energy of the universe and the breath of nature live and move just as they are.
