Landscape of Life삶의 풍경
Against a sky of ochre and beige, ash gray and indigo, yellow spirals of cloud wind and turn, and beneath them rounded hills rise layer upon layer. The hills overlap like translucent panes, each showing through the other, so it is hard to tell where one ends and the next begins. Mushroom-shaped trees stand here and there among them, and at the bottom a few small houses with tiny windows sit low beside a blue river. Laying ink and color in thin washes, again and again, on lined Hanji paper, I let light seep out wherever one plane meets another. Looking back, life has always been a landscape like this. Joy and worry, meeting and parting never came separately; they overlapped, each lighting the other. As the old words say, because this is, that is; when this ceases, that ceases too. Nothing stands alone. Then perhaps what I call “I” is also like those hills, a single place where countless things overlap and shine through. The fainter the borders grow, the less there is to hold on to. Beneath the great swell of sky and hills, the houses are small and quiet. That smallness feels like ease. Leaning on everything, there is nothing to hold up alone.
