Reinterpretation of Irworobongdo: Harmony of the Universe

90.9 × 72.7 cm, 2026Ink, traditional Korean pigments and water-soluble crayon on lined Hanji paper

In a deep blue sky, a white moon hangs on the left and a red sun on the right, while above them the Big Dipper glitters as a chain of golden points. Below rise five peaks built of fractured planes in green, grey and ochre, and from the slopes on either side waterfalls pour down into winding blue waves. Red-trunked pines stand guard over the scene on both sides. Building up ink and colors on lined Hanji paper, and breaking mountains and water into geometric planes before joining them again, I rewove the order of an old painting with a present-day sensibility. Irworobongdo, the Sun, Moon and Five Peaks, was the screen that stood behind the king's throne. Yet within it lives something far larger than the authority of one dynasty: the nature, thought, tradition and philosophy of Korea, condensed and still breathing. The kings who sat before it came and went, but the mountains and waters, the sun and moon, remain as they were. As the old words say, one generation passes away and another comes, but the earth abides forever. I wanted to bring that unchanging nature of ours into the present. Now, not only a king but anyone may stand before it.
