Sea of Wisdom: Rabbit Riding a Turtle

75 × 60 cm, 2026Ink, traditional Korean pigments and water-soluble crayon on lined Hanji paper

Deep in an ink-dark sea, a turtle swims at a slant, cutting through the current. On its back crouches a red rabbit. Around them, waves of blue, yellow and pale green sway like seaweed, and to the right long-leaved seaweed bends with the flow. From somewhere above, a faint light seeps into the water. Laying the deep sea in ink on lined Hanji paper and building up colors layer by layer, I painted the richness of a place where light barely reaches. In the old Korean tale of the rabbit, the rabbit rides on the back of a soft-shelled turtle down to the Dragon King's palace beneath the sea. Here I painted that creature as a sea turtle, at home in the open ocean. The saying that the turtle is slow and the rabbit fast holds true only on land; in the sea, the turtle is far swifter. Slowness and speed, wisdom and foolishness, all change with where one stands. An old saying tells us you cannot speak of the sea to a frog in a well. Deep under the sea, there may be a world as complex and splendid as ours on land, or even more so. To that place none of us has ever been, I wanted to ride on the turtle's back across the sea of wisdom.
