Dynamic Night Sky: Flight in the Clouds

70 × 60 cm, 2026Ink, traditional Korean pigments, water-soluble crayon and oil pastel on lined Hanji paper

Across a night sky steeped in plum-tinted ink, clouds of apricot, coral and pale yellow swirl without rest. White lines coil around each cloud, tracing the paths of the wind, and between them a small bird flies by. The sun has settled not high in the sky but toward the bottom of the picture; for a moment, I wanted to set aside the fixed places of above and below. Letting ink and colors soak into lined Hanji paper and adding the rough lines of oil pastel, I let the night sky writhe and breathe. Is there anything that shows as many faces as the sky? I look up several times a day, yet I have never once seen the same sky twice. The night sky is no different. On some nights, the city's neon glows against the clouds and adds a restless cheer. Up there, in the layers upon layers of sky, how much more must be happening? The night sky is not simply quiet and black. It has been said that we differ from ourselves as much as we differ from others. Just as the sky wears a new face each day, perhaps it is all right for us not to stay in one shape.
