Awe: Ode to Light and Rain
In the upper left of an ink-dark sky hangs the sun. Its round body is divided into pieces of cream, apricot and grey, as if stitched together from scraps of cloth, and from it ribbons of blue, red and pale green unwind like waves and flow to the edge of the sky. Below, a small moon floats faintly, and swirling clouds drift in yellow and rosy light. On the right, beneath a golden cloud, rain pours down in long, long lines. Laying a deep night-colored ground of ink on lined Hanji paper, I added the lines of light and rain in color. While painting again the sun, clouds and rain I see every day, nature began to look entirely different. The sun did not simply rise; the rain did not simply fall. It has been said that what is mystical is not how the world is, but that it is. Painting this, I felt I understood those words a little. That a single ray of sunlight, a single drop of rain, is here, now. Before it I grow small, and in growing small, I become quietly grateful.
