Harmony: Resting Leopard

65 × 63.5 cm, 2026Ink, traditional Korean pigments and water-soluble crayon on lined Hanji paper

On a tree branch, a leopard rests, giving its body over to ease. Its captivating eyes are unhurried yet deep, and the markings that cover its body seep softly into the surrounding clouds, the grain of the wood and the curves of the bending branches. Layering ink and colors into lined Hanji paper and adding lines along the grain of its markings, I painted it so that no one can tell where the leopard ends and the forest begins. Gazing long at those markings, one cannot help but bow before the power of nature. Every animal is magnificent in its own way, and each lives by its own nature. An old saying tells us that four legs on an ox or a horse are the work of heaven, while bridling the horse and piercing the ox's nose are the work of man. We quarrel and wound one another over pride and appearances, lies and betrayal, and in the end we do not shrink even from war. Perhaps all of it is a bridle we have placed on ourselves. When a leopard rests, it simply rests. May we, too, learn again to follow our nature and truly rest.
