Imagination Blooming on the Horns
Under a deep blue sky, a zebra sits among green foliage. The black and white stripes wrapping its body are not straight lines but curves that bend like waves. From its head rise enormous horns that no real zebra has, and before long they turn into branches stretching toward the sky, red leaves hanging from each one. A peacock with a trailing, brilliant tail perches on a branch, and between the branches a figure in yellow flies lightly by. Layering ink and colors into lined Hanji paper and drawing out the grain of stripes and feathers, I made a dreamlike picture where the line between reality and dream grows faint. I love animals. As an old saying goes, do not stretch the duck's short legs or cut the crane's long ones: every animal wears its form for its own reasons, and is precious just as it is. Yet even that form is not fixed forever. Over long ages, animals have slowly changed. So if one day horns should rise from a zebra's head, and trees grow from those horns, it would not be so strange. The mystery of nature is always larger than our imagination. The small figure flying among those branches may be me, searching for an ideal place that never settles into one shape.
