Path to the Sky: Luminous Railing
In the middle of the sky, the railing of a winding stair floats above the clouds. At the very top stands a tall lamp, looking down and shining its light over the steps. Each curve of the railing sways a little differently, and clouds lie low beneath, telling us this place has slipped free of the earth's weight. Compared with my other stair paintings, I let color and line settle down here: ink and colors soak quietly into lined Hanji paper, and only the railing is lifted lightly. Under that light, each step seemed to be waiting for a different footfall. Hurried steps, hesitant steps, steps that pause to rest. No step is wrong. The light from above chooses no stair; it shines on all of them alike, like the old words that the sun rises on everyone. No two people climb the same stair. Even for the same person, yesterday's stair and today's are not the same. This painting is about walking a path with no right answer, each at our own pace, drawing a little closer to the sky.
