Variations in Curves: Scattered Spiral

80 × 60 cm, 2026Ink, traditional Korean pigments and water-soluble crayon on lined Hanji paper

Over a ground of ink-dark and blue, clouds in pale green and sky blue bloom in swirls of thick ink line. On the right, the round ornaments of an iron railing coil upward along a spiral stair, and at the top, red wavy lines shimmer like the heat of the sun. Letting ink and colors soak into lined Hanji paper and layering thick ink lines, I let stair, sunlight and cloud pass their curves to one another, scattering and gathering again. Look around, and little in nature is straight. Rivers, branches, the path the wind leaves behind: all of them bend. Perhaps the straight line is something people made for convenience. It has been said that the straight line belongs to man and the curve to God. In France, such curving stairs caught my eye again and again, the gentlest way to join below and above in a narrow space. In one gallery, the staircase moved me more than the paintings on the walls. There, the curves of nature met a stair made by human hands. What lies beyond it cannot be known. Yet with every turn, a new view opens. Like this spiral, scattering and joining again without a fixed answer, may life never harden into a single shape.
