Rabbit Riding a Dragon

Rabbit Riding a Dragon

A dragon fills the picture, twisting as it surges upward. Its blue scales ripple layer upon layer, and its bared teeth and bulging eyes seem ready to breathe fire. On its back, beside a round moon, a white rabbit sits as if nothing were unusual, as though the rabbit that pounds rice cakes on the moon had come down for a while. Yellow and red flames coil around the dragon with the clouds as if dancing, and at the center of that whirl only the rabbit is still. Building up ink and colors on lined Hanji paper, I let vast movement and small stillness share one picture. The most fearsome creature of the imagination and one of the most fragile animals on earth seem not to belong together at all. Yet a dragon and a rabbit live in each of us: a strength that could swallow the world, and a heart startled by the smallest sound. As an old scripture dreams of the day when the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, perhaps such a meeting can happen in life, too. Strength and weakness are not fixed. The moment fear is set down, even the smallest being can ride the greatest power across the sky.
