Dialogue of Impermanence: Where Water and Wind Rest

30 × 54 cm, 2025Ink and traditional Korean pigments on lined Hanji paper mounted on a traditional Korean bamboo fan

Along the lower edge of the fan, deep blue waves curl round and roll in without end, and above them clouds of yellow and apricot and thick, ink-dark wind swirl together. Water ripples in the wind, and the wind only shows itself upon the water. Neither stays the same for even a moment. The Diamond Sutra tells us that all things are like a dream, an illusion, a bubble, a shadow, like dew and like lightning, and that we should see them so. Our ever-changing hearts are no different from these waves. The moment we notice that everything changes, the heart that tried to hold on quietly comes to rest. When the fan is opened, that rest blows out as a single breeze.
