Steadfast Devotion: A Bold Swim

30 × 54 cm, 2025Ink and traditional Korean pigments on lined Hanji paper mounted on a traditional Korean bamboo fan

Across a white Hanji fan, a great fish swims, bending its body in a wide arc. Thick strokes of ink sweep boldly along its back and tail, and beneath its yellow and apricot body blue waves ripple gently. Before its wide-open eye, red bubbles swirl. A fish never closes its eyes, day or night. That is why the old temples of Korea shaped their eave bells and wooden gongs like fish, as a reminder to stay awake. To keep to one's own way, unshaken even before rough waves: that is yeoyeo, steadfastness. Each time the fan is waved, may that clear, unbending spirit be carried on the breeze.
