Companionable Prayer: A Moment of Togetherness정겨운 동행: 기도하는 시간

On a white prayer table sits a small glass vase, and from it pink blossoms stretch out on long stems to fill the picture. A lamp stands beside it; at the upper right, my dog Geumbok, in a striped shirt, sits with quiet dignity; and at the very bottom, my cat Doldol lies stretched out long before the table. This is my prayer time, the one I meet every day. It has been said that all of humanity's unhappiness comes from not knowing how to sit quietly in a room. In this small room, I have come to believe it. With two friends keeping me company without a word, the most ordinary hour becomes the most sacred.

하얀 기도상 위에 작은 유리 꽃병이 놓여 있고, 거기서 분홍 꽃송이들이 긴 줄기를 뻗어 화면 가득 피어난다. 곁에는 램프가 서 있고, 오른쪽 위에는 줄무늬 옷을 입은 강아지 금복이가 의젓하게 앉아 있으며, 맨 아래에는 고양이 돌돌이가 기도상 앞에 몸을 길게 늘이고 누워 있다. 매일 마주하는 나의 기도 시간이다. 사람의 모든 불행은 방 안에 조용히 머물 줄 모르는 데서 온다는 말이 있다. 나는 이 작은 방 안에서 그 말을 믿게 되었다. 아무 말 없이 곁을 지켜 주는 두 친구와 함께라면, 가장 평범한 시간이 가장 성스러운 시간이 된다.
