Garden of the Senses: A Gift to Myself
Over an ink-grey ground, flowers bloom upward. At the lower left and near the top, coral blossoms curl round, pale green leaves rise to sharp points, and between them ribbons of blue and white drift up like fragrance and circle through the picture. On the day I prepared a single flower for myself, I wanted to carry that small but certain happiness just as it was. There are old words: consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. A flower does not strive to be seen. It simply blooms and gives off its scent. May a fragrant flower quietly bloom in the heart of everyone who sees this painting.
