Flight of Joy: The Phoenix Embracing the Blue Planet환희의 비상: 푸른 행성을 품은 봉황

A great blue planet floats round at the center of the picture, and a phoenix spreads its wings as if to hold it in its arms. Around its red-crested head, its coral wings and its striding legs, striped ribbons coil and circle the planet. On the right, a yellow light rises and spreads, and in that light every color is lifted high. The phoenix, bearing the forms of many sacred creatures in one body, is a symbol of blessing and joy. It has been said that joy is the passage from a lesser to a greater perfection. While painting this, I felt that passage in my own body. May that overflowing joy pass into the lives of those who see it, as a small light.

커다란 푸른 행성이 화면 한가운데 둥글게 떠 있고, 봉황이 그 행성을 품에 안듯 날개를 펼친다. 붉은 볏을 단 머리와 산호빛 날개, 성큼 내딛는 다리 둘레로 줄무늬 띠들이 휘감기며 행성을 감싸 돈다. 오른쪽에서는 노란 빛이 번져 오르고, 그 빛을 받아 모든 색이 한껏 들뜬다. 봉황은 여러 영물의 모습을 한 몸에 지닌, 축복과 환희의 상징이다. 기쁨이란 조금 덜 온전한 자리에서 조금 더 온전한 자리로 옮겨 가는 일이라는 말이 있다. 이 그림을 그리는 동안 나는 그 옮겨 감을 몸으로 느꼈다. 그 벅찬 기쁨이 보는 이의 삶에도 작은 빛으로 건너가기를.
