Aesthetics from Aversion: The Fluidity of Curves
On an ink-dark ground, a snake lies coiled in a great spiral. Its body, divided into pieces of olive, pink, red and blue, winds round and round, and the face lifted at the upper left has, unexpectedly, gentle eyes and rosy cheeks. Since childhood, this was the creature I feared so much that even a photograph could make me scream. Yet looking at it long enough, I found there the most supple and beautiful curves that nature has shaped. An old saying tells us that the moment the world recognizes beauty as beauty, ugliness is born. Perhaps beauty and ugliness live not in the thing itself but in the eyes that look upon it. This painting is a record of slowly making peace with the being I once feared most.
