Flexible Waves: Swimming Through Defilements

75 × 55 cm, 2025Ink and traditional Korean pigments on lined Hanji paper

Near the top of a pale pink ground swims a small fish, and from its body a single ink line unwinds, wriggling like a dance down through the picture. Along that path, curves of coral, pale green, yellow and violet overlap and spread like waves, and at the very bottom small mountains and blue water ripple. I painted it as if letting a melody of water spread across the paper. The afflictions that pile up in life cannot be swept away at once. An old saying tells us that rather than fish moistening one another in a drying spring, it is better for them to swim in rivers and lakes, forgetting one another. When we stop trying to push our afflictions away and give ourselves to their waves, light and color that were hidden even in dark moments begin to appear.
