Small Work – Passing Through Now소품 – 지금 지나가는 중

Joy, sorrow, anger and tears all pass. I wanted to paint not the aftermath, but the instant in the very middle of the flow. Wavering and unfinished, it feels to me like the truer face of life, for life is not a destination called completion, but the flow itself.

In an old tale, a king asked for a ring engraved with words that would keep him from being carried away in joy or crushed in sorrow. The words engraved were: "This too shall pass." Completion does not matter. It is enough simply to be passing through, right now.

기쁨도, 슬픔도, 분노도, 눈물도 모두 지나간다. 나는 이미 지나간 뒤가 아니라, 지금 흐름 한가운데 있는 그 찰나를 그리고 싶었다. 완성되지 않은 채 흔들리는 모습이 오히려 삶의 더 진실한 얼굴이라고 느낀다. 삶은 완성이라는 목표가 아니라 흐름 그 자체이기 때문이다.

옛이야기 속 한 왕은 기쁠 때 들뜨지 않고 슬플 때 무너지지 않게 해 줄 한마디를 반지에 새기라고 했다. 반지에 새겨진 말은 "이 또한 지나가리라"였다. 완성은 중요하지 않다. 지금 지나가는 중이라는 사실만으로 충분하다.
