Fantasia: Aerial Dance
At the top of the picture, a female aerialist trusts her body to a single rope and rises into the air. Stage light spreads along her movements, and soft pastel tones bloom like clouds around her. Below, a man spins plates without pause, and concentric circles of intense color ripple out from his hands, layer upon layer. Above, pale and light; below, dense and solid. Letting ink and colors soak into lined Hanji paper, I gave the two worlds different weights. It is a scene from a circus I once saw in France, and it stayed with me. The moment his hands stop, the plates fall, so he cannot stop. The wish to have more and the fear of losing keep our own plates spinning endlessly. The woman on the rope holds on to nothing but one thin line, and so she is light. Perhaps that is why the fish, dragons, birds and clouds in my paintings are always rising: they long for that lightness. We fear that if we lay our burdens down, we will fall. Perhaps it is only then that we can fly.
