Water and pine, sun and cloud: I gathered the oldest things in nature into a single place. A vigorous current flows without rest, and above it a pine stands in its evergreen spirit. The pine has long been said to resemble the integrity of the Joseon scholar, and it is also where my own heart turns when it wishes not to waver.

An old saying tells us that only when the year grows cold do we know the pine and the cypress are the last to wither. An exiled scholar once wrote those words beside a painting of pines for the student who had never stopped visiting him. Evergreen is revealed not on warm days, but in the coldest season.
