Feast of Blue Water: Mountain and Waterfall

30 × 54 cm, 2026Ink and traditional Korean pigments on lined Hanji paper mounted on a traditional Korean bamboo fan

Across a fan of open white Hanji paper, deep blue water churns in a fierce whirl. The current coils at the far right, then pours broadly to the left, throwing up white spray, and beyond it rounded stones of grey and earth tones pile up like a mountain. Coral lines drift among the rocks like wind, like the sound of water. Pushing ink and colors in bold, unbroken strokes, I left the force of the very moment a waterfall drops. A traditional Korean fan is born from the meeting of bamboo ribs and Hanji paper, and it has a character different from other East Asian fans or those of Europe. On this fan, which becomes a painting the moment it is opened in the hand, I wanted to carry our mountains and waters. There are old words saying that the wind blows where it wishes; you hear its sound, but cannot tell where it comes from or where it goes. Each time this fan is opened and waved, I hope the sound of the waterfall is carried away just so, cool and free, to somewhere unknown.
